The Arts Desk Visit The London Galleries For An Assortment Of Visual Art
With a range of Romanticism, Impressionism and Postmodernism on show, art lovers are sure to be satisfied by visiting the big London galleries this autumn. The Arts Desk’s critics have their say below.
Applauded for bringing out its collection of John Martin works out of storage was Tate Britain. Although he was not rated by his contemporaries, the man was the top painter in the 19th century, after Turner, of epic disasters. One of the greatest London galleries is now giving him an impressive outing with ‘John Martin: Apocalypse’. Martin gets the credit he deserves as a strong, solid painter in this exhibition.
‘Degas and the Ballet: Picturing Movement’, the new exhibition by the Royal Academy, enchanted Fisun Guner. The graceful kinetic energy of movement in static visual art was always aimed to be captured by Degas, particularly that tension-filled moment of action about to take place. Ballet dancers strive to create the perfect work, so many of them were painted behind the scenes. Images by Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey are also exhibited, and their influence on the photography of Degas is apparent. As well as being a great and underrated colourist, Degas was also a master draughtsman, which is shown in his enthralling sketches.
The V&A Museum attempted to untangle the cut-and-paste style that emerged in the Seventies with ‘Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990’. Modernism had a forward-looking austerity about it, but it gave way to kitsch nostalgia and the shameless borrowing of ideas across architecture, art and design. Frank Schreiner’s shopping-trolley-turned-chair is a fine example of the playful, pointedly idiosyncratic design that was a result of this.
‘The Last of England’ by Derek Jarman is a work that expresses the era’s disillusionment at Modernism’s failed ideals. Moving into the Eighties the theme leans more towards fun, superficiality and pastiche with exhibits featuring Grace Jones and Boy George. The show is a pertinent reminder of the huge influence that Postmodernism has had on our thinking and how relevant it still is in the modern age.
